One if my pet peeves is assuming all adult blooming irises are NOIDS and searching for a name, finding an iris that looks a great deal like it, accepting that the subtle differences are due to different growing areas and giving it that irises name. There are so many lovely NOIDS that have never been registered or named. I have never planted seeds in my garden and always take off the seed pods. Even with my diligence I have four little seedlings that came up in the beds. These were about a half inch high and 4-5 inches from a rhizome with just iris tops and a little nub where the rhizome would develop. If I had left them to develop I could actually say no seeds had ever been planted there so they must be a named iris someone had gifted me with. One is a ruffly dwarf yellow and I am sure I could find a current iris that looks similar and attach that name. I think a lot of our NOIDS that we strive to find names for should be loved for what they are and not necessarily given an existing irises name. I always like to read from the experienced iris growers on here that you must research and then grow your questionable iris next to the named variety before tagging the name on the stranger. Just my two cents worth but I cringe when I read words like "close enough, I'll put that name on it until I find out differently' when the iris seems so close with just a different colored beard. What???... (Getting off my soap box now)
