Brent and Becky's catalog recommends planting the bulbs deep and mulching amaryllis in zone 6. Being borderline hardy, you may want to store them dry in the pots over winter and plant in spring. This gives the bulbs a full season in the ground to establish before winter and this can boost winter hardiness.
