Just like you, I saw H. lahue growing in my IL's lawn about 3 years ago and also in my parents backyard. I dug them up (and they are deep) and they have rebloomed for me the last several years. Here's a photo from last year. They are one of my favorites.

I've collected seeds from them and hope they will germinate and develop into bulbs.
