poly/marilyn this is a non sequitur and from left field, because i was reading a 2015 post of " (I really need to work on iris beds and iris planting this summer. But I hate the heat... and everything has to be protected from gophers... (* whine *))".
i am always having gopher probs, and wanted to to know if you had ever done an interspersing of garlic bulbs around your irises and plants? i was wondering if this might deter the gophers in any way?
while we were @ costco the other day, i bought a whole bag of garlic cloves for $3-4. there were about 15 or so; i split them up into 1-2 "bulb-lets", and planted them along the fenceline to the openspace in back where the offenders are tunneling into our yard; plus planted many more closer to the irises.
i am [hoping th]is might work. also, someone at our local society offered gopher spurge. i think it's a euphorbia? i've never had to deal with gophers before. all i can say about them is they are a PAIN in [edited to finish the sentence....lest you accuse me of saying the wrong thing.] the back side. ( ha lol)
