After I filled the birds' platform feeder with whole peanuts this morning, I watched as a squirrel started nosing around under it. It's mounted on a pole about 5' above ground so that only birds can eat from it, so I was thinking it was out of luck and should mosey on over to the squirrel feeding area, where I had put some shelled peanuts.

Just then, a Blue Jay dropped a whole peanut over the side of the feeder. I've seen Jays drop peanuts on the ground seemingly on purpose before, and always assumed they planned to swoop down later and get them. Sometime other Jays fly down and pick them up, but today guess who lucked out? Yep, one happy squirrel who's not as dumb as I thought Smiling
