Ginger, you didn't ask for opinion...I know this thread is more grump than asking for opinion.
But, ( and I am NOT trying to excuse your boy ) many males don't think too far in the future. You are a constant in his life. You are dependable. You are always there. He knows it. He depends on it. He does not even think about the fragility of life or the passing of time. Mom is always going to be there. She won't go out the door in a puff of perfume. It is the way it is. Again, no excuses and I am not saying it is right. If you have a private moment with him, tell him that your feelings are hurt and you expect a bit more from him at his age. You don't need a totally dedicated day..just a call or a drop in visit with two donuts and a happy face finished off with a hug. TELL him.
