Thanks Debra. It is steel. It would have required considerable force. My daughter said the post, which is in concrete, was bent somewhat, in a direction away from the impact. Your scenario seems likely except that the letterbox is 15 ft in from the curb and in front of shrubbery and trees. The driver would have to be very drunk to have gone that close to the trees. The strangest thing is that the damage suggests it was inflicted at 90 degrees to the side of the box, ie. parallel to the road which would have required a vehicle to be close alongside the trees.
It is a bit alarming.
Too hot to work outside until late afternoon. Then I moved 16 barrow loads of fill. So at last I can plant more stuff in the shade. My 50 + sdlgs from Della's seeds all look healthy and it will soon be time to pot them up. The sun has really swung around to the South.
