I used miracle grow potting soil. Had 6 drainage slits in each jug. Mix was about 2" deep. The stuff that germinated did OK but didn't get much germination. I had to move the jugs to the ground next to my SFG bed because the wind blew them off the table. I made a "bed" for the jugs with bricks. I left the tops off and the snow and rain watered them. After stuff sprouted I watered it if it looked dry.
