I worked for the postal service for several years and I can confirm that a lot of the companies whose catalogs you are getting are not in charge of whether or not you still get them. They can sign you up but they can't take you off. They are mailed out en masse from companies that keep independent lists which are added to every year but are not separated from for as many as 10 years, if ever.
That's why you can sign up easily but can't unsubscribe nearly as easily!
