I'll try the "squeeze a leaf" method. I think that if the leaf is mushy, the plant is definitely a goner. However, what I have witnessed is the central core of the Agave rots and the leaves remain in pretty good shape. So the Agave may look fine in April until you grab onto the central cone and find that it breaks loose from internal rot. Crying
