Sweet potatoes for me have few above ground pests except rabbits and deer. I would suggest that your first step is to identify the "bug". There may be an "organic" deterrent. U of Maryland has sweet potato experts which will consult with your county agricultural extension agent. It will pay you to get acquainted with your county agent.
