meanwhile--consider using a large cake cover as a temporary baffle.
Cut a 3" tp 4" slit in the cake cover--long enough to insert the chain or hanger through.
I did that on the very expensive (50%0ff) all metal finch feeder I got at Big Lots about 3 years ago.
