Yardenman I don't do raised beds, but I have a little Mantis tiller that I till in composted manure and black dirt (we have a BIG pile of that), and depending on the time I have, sometimes it is just the hole and surrounding area that gets the amendments. Sometimes I till up a whole area and amend it. I also added a specific garden compost to my veggie garden last Fall and I've been saving coffee grounds and eggshells (tomatoes) for the veggies. Right now I am working with a couple acres, but have small areas landscaped in different areas, not the whole thing. But if I don't watch it and if I keep buying flowers Whistling Whistling Whistling Whistling Whistling

I have a small 10" electric tiller that is very convenient for small spaces. It seems to work better pulled back than allowing it to crawl forward on its own, but what works, works. LOL!

I have been adding a lot of Leafgro to my beds this year. I don't have a large are, but I think I've added 3" to the whole area since November.

BTW, I also save eggshells. I crush them in a large bowl, then powder half with the blender. The other half just stayed mildly crushed for longer-term decomposition.

The larger unimproved areas get the serious tiller treatment ever few years. I try save as many worms as possible when I do that. I learned from my Dad who used this technie when wanting worms for fishing.

You lay soak the soil and lay a plastic sheeting on the ground. A few days later, you lift it and the surface is full of worms. You collect those and set them in a covered hole in the loosened soil to let them spread around.

No garden can have too many worms! ;)
