All this talk about mulch just reminded me that I should go and get some soon. I will only put the mulch out after I have pruned and fertilized. I will be using reed mulch made from Miscanthus. It is about the same price as wood chips or bark chips and they say is doesn't deplete the nitrogen in the soil.

The weather isn't that pleasant today - very windy and wet - so I am inside sitting at the computer. But the last three days have been wonderfully sunny in between. Although we had heavy frost on Sunday and a low of -6C in the morning, it warmed up to 9C in the afternoon. So I have started getting the beds cleaned up - so great getting out and doing 'actual' gardening again Big Grin

We were speaking of pegging.
Last year I trained my three HP's around posts and they looked like this - March and then in June

This year I have tried something new based on Neal's idea of pegging neighbouring roses into each other. I have formed two arches and pegged the odd smaller canes back down into the bushes. It's going to be interesting to see what they look like come June.
