DD in Ohio says she dropped the eastern MA acent except for the name Martha i.e. Matha & can't seem to put the r in the name. I am from the midwest so don't have this eastern stuff except one can pick it up. I have to be careful how I say Gloucester. The 'r' is on the end but the middle sounds Bostonish.
My mother (from Omaha) went to school north of Boston & I can remember as a child her chuckles when someone asked her for directions to the Bawston Store. She gave directions & walked along chuckling Bawston Store to herself. I didn't understand the joke at that time.
