Sorry, I don't know anything about the edibility (to critters) of hyacinthoides hispanica... I don't have gophers here, but I imagine your problem might be similar to dealing with voles here. Some years (especially when new construction disturbs nearby habitat) we're absolutely infested with them, and that's when they'll eat every tulip, every giant crocus bulb..

Hyacinthoides hispanica is on the list! So I'm not sure what happened to yours... soil too wet? or in a tough winter, varmints might have gone after things they'd normally avoid
