We think alike because that's what I was thinking. Then I realized that toilet drains don't go straight down (something to do with allowing water to stand in the drains and thus preventing sewer gases from coming up ... same as why a sink drain has curves in it ... but I'm not a plumber so that might not be exactly the correct explanation). Anyway, if you look at the side of your toilet (unless you have the new straight sided kind) you will see how it drains. So in order not to have a bowl full of soggy soil, it would need a hole directly out from it at the bottom. Does this make sense?
