Venetian blind user here. And I use hundreds of them! And hand write them, too.
For in ground tags you can bury them, as Lynn says, or sometimes I face the tags inward and away from the sun. Many of those Sharpie pens and sun just fade out, event he so-called "nursery" pens will. Pencil holds up, no doubt about it.
