I've never participated in a book club. I think I would have trouble reconciling club members' different impressions of a book with my own impression. If I read a book and then watch the movie, the movie is not how I imagined it, and I can never read the book again without movie scenes popping up in my head!

Books I have read and enjoyed recently:

Hugh Howley's science-fiction trilogy of 'Wool', 'Shift', and 'Dust'. I was hooked immediately by the vivid reality of the characters and the strange future they inhabit. Reading it, I was there with them.

Daniel O'Malley's books about Her Majesty's Supernatural Secret Service, 'The Rook' and 'Stiletto', in which British operatives with supernatural abilities battle all manner of dangerous creatures, some of which turn out to be no less monstrous than themselves. There is humor as well as horror. I was astonished to learn that the author is Australian and was educated in the US, as he writes so perfectly about Britain.

Sylvain Neuvel's series of 'The Themis Files' books, written in the form of memos and interview transcripts. The first one, 'Sleeping Giants', was so gripping that I am waiting impatiently for the next volume 'Waking Gods' to arrive in paperback (I refuse to spend twice the money on a hardback that won't fit on my bookshelf).
