My process for Phals. Works well for me.
Clay or plastic
Fill bottom one third with aliflor mix
Fill middle one third with sphagnum moss.
Fill top one third of pot with aliflor mix.
Aliflor mix is 60% aliflor or Hydroton, 20% seedling gade charcoal and 20% sponge rock.
Mix works well for me because aliflor layers dry quickly yet sphagnum layer holds more moisture. Plants are watered once weekly in summer, once every ten days in cooler weather. They are on a bench under the overhang in my lanai. It is bright later in the day but no sun really.
My Phalaenopsis like it and I am using same potting method for my Oncidiums and my Catasetums.
Just keep in mind that I am sub-tropical, bark mixes rot in six months!! Ugh
