I'm going to get a pix of mom's plant and post it here. Maybe someone will recognize it and help us with a name. I've googled it, and haven't found a match yet. Could it be possible that it's lighter colored because it's lined with crushed limestone and probably has very little nutrients available to it? I've noticed that this clump doesn't seem to get larger like the ones in the tended beds do. This one has at least two other plants growing in its clump, so maybe it's just starving.
