Becky, mine is planted in a mix of crappy soil, some clay, and rocks. LOL It's doing great, but I will tell you that I watered it LOTS last summer, its first year. And when it got cold I put an additional bag of cypress mulch around the base of the plant. I would say that it's pretty well established now. Maybe a pot wouldn't let yours develop the root system it needs??? IDK..........
