I'm going to give this a try this year. I can get tons of cardboard daily at work, cut it to fit and I've got some landscaping fabric staples I can use to hold it down. I'm planting a bunch of iris so I'll just make the holes where they're going and keep the mulch from touching them.
I've also read in some of the Garden by the Moon places online that weeding on certain suggested days will keep things from growing back as quickly. That is always worth a test to try it too.
