I purchased a Star Jasmine and a Royal Jasmine two years ago. They bloom all the time and they look identical with the exception of the leaves. I have been trying to find out if Hirt or Logee mis labeled them. Both have identical flowers and both flowers have the same fragrance.
I have been discussing these plants with a customer of mine who works at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and he sent me this information.
Royal jasmine (Jasminum rex) has a completely different petal shape and the flowers are the largest in the jasmine family, it is hard to find...it is also scentless.
Star jasmine (Jasminum multiflorum) has a similiar flower to the nitidum but the buds should not be pink and should be forn in an umbel shape inflorescence.
He suggested there was a mixup in the labeling at the places I purchased them.
I see a definite difference in the leaves, but my mystery is that the flowers on both plants smell identical. Yet, the Royal is to be scentless.
Here is a picture of the so called Royal jasminum nitidum that I have.
Now the Star jasminum nitidum
