Sounds like fun! You could always make bouquets of dead flowers and grasses to leave around.
The little pumpkins stay on the stem for a long time ~ haven't lost one yet. Some of the most mature fruit look fine aside from being a little wrinkled. This article says they can be dried for decorations.
