I have a Hapu'u tree fern that has begun to grow into the power lines coming into our house.
I need to cut it back or transplant it.
I believe it is a Cibotium glaucum.
Although, it could less likely be a Cibotium menziesii.
It has 5 offsets growing on it's trunk, 3 of which are low on the trunk, and quite well developed, creating an understory of fronds.
What I'd like to do is cut off the upper portion of the trunk just above the 3 well developed offsets taking the upper smaller offset with it. It would end up being about 2-1/2' to 3' long after removing all the developed fronds from it, leaving only the new developing fiddle heads.
Then, I'd like to plant it upright maybe 8" to 12" deep in the mulched area near the bottom of the 1st photo, about 15' to 20' away from the original plant. I would support it with stakes until a root system developed enough to hold it upright.
Is there anyone familiar enough with propagating and growing Hapu'u that can comment on my plan for this tree fern?
