Life is "mind over matter". If I d
Jill--
I don't remember (when you posted) and sked re ovwewintering Brugs. Sorry!
I did not get to this until way later. Will try to remember.....and answer you...

You were asking about cutting back brugs. Was it for in the fall? Or in the spring??

Cutting back, any size stems, in the fall is OK if you want to root them for next year.
Any size stems will root in a soilless mix, adequately watering, with bright light nearby.
I have even rooted, successfully, the main trunk of one of my Grugs!!.
That was funny.... Rolling on the floor laughing

Re your question about rooting a cut stem that has "Y'ed" in hopes it will grow
new "Y'ed" stems from it it the following year is not logical. YES! In time--the cutting will grow new stems--but the "Ying" has to happen naturally, and in due time.
Patience is the virtue here...

October is the best time to expect prolific blooming from your brug--IF it is so inclined.
Especially the Dr. Seuss. It is a strong grower- and wide-spreading.

Think of a BIG beach umbrella with yellow blooms hanging down from all the stems.

Fall is the best time to cut back your Brug Root any of the cuttings in a soilless Mix,
keep it in bright light and water as needed. You will see new growths coming up soon.

Donner, and her method of growing full-sized Brugs from a cutting to blooming in the same year, is amazing!
Her "secret" is moving the plants over to a bigger and bigger pots regularly.
Like----from an 6" cutting in a 6" pot to a massive, 20" pot ,and in full bloom.
In the same year!!!! That is amazing! Talk to Donner--she will fill you in. I have never done this.
My "Maya" is a lag-behind brug. But then--my Brugs have no good soil to grow into.
They sit in the same pots as all winter. in my cool basement.

I still follow the "Pot-in-pot" method--of propagating cuttings as that is what I learned from my FIRST brug teacher--(before DG_. )
What was it called then???? AHH-"-Garden Club???

And....this MAN's name was "Tennesee Green Thumb".
Anyone here "old-timer" enough to remember this person???

I don't think I joined the "real" DG until a couple years later.
When I saw the name :"Green Thumb"( here on DG)---I thought it was the same person.... D'Oh!

OH, YES!!!! Some of us go back a LONG---Long---time....
Shall we take a roster of WHO???? Gita
