Jan, I have hand written maps and maps on the computer. By spring, the tags are usually hiding under all the new growth. So I printout the computer maps during bloom Season and use those as a reference. I then use that printout throughout the Season and write down any changes on those pages.
I make the maps in LibreOffice Writer, which is similar to MS Word, but it's free. I even place where the trees are, or any other identifying marker that beds are near. (fence, tree, bushes, barn, etc...)
