Kathy, did I already answer this? Sorry if I'm repeating myself - I actually haven't rototilled for about 4 years; that started when the fall and then the spring were just too wet, and after that I just continued not tilling and just loosening the soil with my garden fork. Intended to till this fall in hopes of getting rid of some pests that I had trouble with this year (asparagus beetles and squash vine borers), but again it was just too wet. Oh well! Shrug!

Sandy ...

I purchased a book written by Ruth Stout called How To Have A Green Thumb Without an Aching Back (published in 1955) years ago. She was a pioneer in no till gardening.

I know it works because my soil was dead when I started my garden and I couldn't even dig a hole with a pick. Now, I have enough worms to have a mole problem and can dig in the soil with a trowel. I've never tilled my soil.

She's written several books about no till gardening. I just did a Google search and some of them can be downloaded. She has a marvelous writing style and her books would make good winter reading ... Smiling
I'd rather weed than dust ... the weeds stay gone longer.
