AG, I agree about the otherworldly nature of the landscape down in the desert. It is not volcanic, but there are a couple of extinct volcanoes about halfway between here and there. (Great local source of lava rock. Thumbs up ) The soil in CataviƱa is incredibly rocky. That rock looks like granite and crumbles like granite.



The megasucculents which grow there often start out in cracks in the rock, and then over the course of decades their roots bust through that rock to anchor them. Home sweet home is a crack in the rock. They are pioneer species in pure rock substrates.
