Daphne, I have grown Japanese Maples from seed and I did just that - except I used paper towels and left them in the fridge for 3 months. Don't know if they need to be kept cool that long, but it worked fairly well. I seem to remember I had a germination rate of just under 50%.
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!
