shizen said: Hurray! we got 2.5 inches of rain in the last rain dump. i'm sure my garden was happy to receive that gift.

i went out to survey damage, if any, groom irises, and make notes on a to-do list. i see the white flies have swarmed the hibiscus, which will need spraying (water and eucalyptus soap), weeds that are already popping up all over, and i did a little iris grooming.

that will all have to wait, because it's spa day for mia. after our recent trip, where there are deer ticks, i found a tick lodged behind her ear. so, it's bath time, nails to be clipped , feet to be manicured, and pads and tail to be groomed. the garden will have to wait til tomorrow. i want to make sure there aren't any more ticks that i have missed. ( luckily and yuck) the insect found wasn't more than an 1/8" skin tag.

i found a handy plastic tool on amazon that hooks under the tick's "mouth" and the tool is twisted so the tick releases without leaving parts behind under the skin. now all i have to do is monitor mia to make sure she hasn't been infected with lyme disease. but i read that you cannot take them in prematurely (before 4 wk.). the blood work may come back 'negative' because the bacteria hasn't had a chance to present itself.

i'm monitoring her, and i'm not liking where the tick was removed. it's still bright red. i will take her in next week if the color doesn't improve, or she exhibits other symptoms such as depression, or not eating.

sorry to digress.

A one time double dose of doxycycline (200mg) immediately after a tick bite can prevent Lyme's disease in humans. I don't know about critters. However, simply treating for Lyme's may be cheaper than testing for it. Besides that, a full course of doxycycline to treat Lyme's Disease will kill off 3 other tick transmitted diseases that dogs and humans can get: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (Rickettsia), Rabbit Fever (Tularemia), and Ehrlichiosis.
I live in the tick-infested Ozarks, where I have seen several instances of a person contracting 2 tick diseases at once. (One person caught 3 at once this year.) I keep an emergency bottle of Doxycycline on hand at all times.
I digress too, but this information might save some dog or human's life.
