Jan, you need to share your secrets too. I recall you mentioning that you mixed rice hulls into your soil, but what else? Tom, I recall you saying that you never fertilize and that your soil is a little sandy and fertile enough.
Rob, our soil is light clay that drains well where the iris beds are, and we've used rice hulls to keep the soil fluffy when we plant, along with as much compost as we can muster - both homegrown and bought - and bone meal at the bottom of each iris hole.We've been offered a lot of well-aged horse manure, that I'd love to get my hands on, but our very old truck has given up the ghost. We're on the lookout for a "new" used pickup. I give everyone some tri-phosphate when I have it.
Some lime, too, but not a lot, because I suspect that the soil is somewhat acidic because this was a redwood forest. My home soil test was inconclusive. I don't lose many irises, but some do better than others.
