Leslie, I don't know that there's anything special that I do. But I do know they should be dug and divided once they get to this point. Otherwise they start to crowd together and that does stop them from doing well. I use a top dressing of 0-45-0 in early spring with no nitrogen. I use a "light" mulch of pine bark chips & pea gravel. This helps with weeds, but I am careful not to lay it on too thick. Here is a picture of Devoted where I waited too long to dig & divide. This is about a five-year clump which I finally dug out last summer. In the picture at left the clump is way too crowded and suffers for lack of space.

This is the phosphate that I use. I once read somewhere that one of the famous hybridizers used this. I can't remember who, but I think it was Joe Ghio.
