Daphne, I use a little dish soap and water in a squirt bottle for aphids. Just as a warning, it will take out the good bugs too. So once I see the lady bugs and soldier beetles move in, the spraying stops. For insets with a shell, you can add a little rubbing alcohol into the mix (works on mealybugs too). I also spray my hands with it after I'm done gardening for a quick wash and rinse.
