LorettaNJ said:Jackie, can you get saffron from Tricolor? I thought saffron was harvested from Crocus sativus which blooms in fall (not Colchicum autumnale which may be poisonous). I did buy that once but forgot what it was - so no saffron for me. But it would make sense you can get something from other crocuses?
And thank you Ginny and Jackie! Jackie, some witch hazels are fragrant. I also have Diane which is not known to be fragrant. Even so, some years one side of the tree may be fragrant and the other not, some years nothing at all. I highly recommend them if you have room. They really start the season early for you.

You are completely correct, Loretta; thanks for the heads up. I'll chalk it up to reading up on crocuses too quickly.

Good to know about Diane -- I would definitely be interested in the fragrant varieties Smiling Can you harvest any of the plant to make the witch hazel astringent that I buy at the store?
A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust. — Gertrude Jekyll
