Welcome to the orchid forums. By looking at all of our threads you will find several pertaining to Phalaenopsis care.
The American Orchid Society website is of tremendous help too. www.aos.org, and by going there a pull down tab at the top offers free copies of "orchid care" sheets. There is one for Phalaenopsis care. They are downloadable and printable pdf files.
Moss is a hard media to grow Phalaenopsis in, especially for a beginner. They take no direct sun, like to never dry out between waterings and you can fertilize once a month.
A garden center or place like Home Depot or Lowe's sells orchid mix which is largely bark. This would be more suitable as a growing media. Always pot in a container with drainage holes.
Trim dead roots and treat by dusting cuts with plain cinnamon. Repot according to size of live root mass, too large of a pot leads to watering issues. Grow in a bright spot, east window might be a place to start and water plant one day for every pot inch. 4" pot, water every 4 days!! Try that for starters and again welcome.
Lots of good orchid growers hang out here!!!
