Daphne, while I hope you can grow some of the little ones Crossing Fingers! and I do not want to contradict Mika, I know there are tremendous differences between areas that perhaps should have similar temperatures according to the USDA zones. I'm technically in a zone 7B here, but the climate here in the south of Sweden is still very different than most USDA 7B areas and you would need to look at very detailed weather data to begin to understand why. From a plants perspective we would be more of a zone 6 and even some zone 5 plants would fail here.

I took the liberty to dig out some general comparisons for you, in case you would find it useful. I would scroll down to especially look at the growing season and you would notice that Menton while a warm area, still seems to have much more defined seasons than San Diego:
