Opuntias are often difficult to identify because there is a tremendous amount of variability within each species and most species will freely hybridize with each other (probably one reason why there is so much variability within species), resulting in many intermediate forms.

That said, Opuntia humifusa would be the species you would most likely encounter in Indiana, both in the wild and in cultivation:
