Ok, here we go:
first sort of loop, just overlaying the yarn like this

pulling through this a loop with the long side

holding this arrangement with your left fingers/thumb and making a single crochet into that first loop you just made

That part is a bit wiggly, but simply hold it firmly with your left fingers/thumb and make more single crochet into the loop

Usually you make a total of 5 or 6 single crochet into the original ring. I did 5 here
Now look at the short string on the "right/visible" side, it is wrapped twice around the loop on the right. Now I don't know if others do that, but I take out those two wraps so I can pull the loop with more ease.

Hang on to the piece with your left and pull on that short string with your right hand, observing the correct direction, you will feel it as it pulls to a circle. Then I join the circle with a single crochet into that first single crochet you made at the beginning.

Just pulling the string once to the right side to show what it looks like. You can leave it for later or
Thumb of 2018-07-11/Ursula/c422b9
pull it back to the "wrong side"

And this is what it looks like totally closed up

at the second row you will double up your stitches to 10 single crochet stitches
at the third row you will increase to 15, that means double up every second stitch
On the 4. row double up every third stitch to 20 and so on. As long as you increase every row by 5, this round patch stays flat.
If you start with 6 stitches into the loop, you will increase every row by 6 until the desired circumference is achieved.

This is how I start the head on my dolls.
Any other questions on how to shape things, I will be happy to show. I hope it makes sense! Smiling
