I'm curious when and why sweet corn is now more or less planted like field corn. One seed in the soil, and the next seed 6-8" away. I watched my dad plant 2 or three seeds in a small hole and repeat this about every 20". I've done it Dad's way (at least nearly...I just till, drag hoe to make a trench, then plant 2-3 seeds every 15-18").

When I see the more modern way and think about it, it seems not the right thing for me. In my 85' rows, I'll end up with 40+ groups of corn, but if I did one plant every 6" or so, that would be a lot more spots that I'd be weeding by hand as that would be too close to use the hoe safely. So what is the advantage of this modern approach? We always thought with two seeds working to grow, our tough clay soil would have less chance of preventing a seed from breaking through, too.
