I grew up with a pawpaw tree in my side yard. It is sweet, thick, rich, custard-y in flavor. They are better eaten fresh than cooked; they have such a natural sweetness they don't need anything added. You can tell when they are ripe by the darkness of their covering, nearly black, and they should never be eaten when unripe. They have a rich tropical flavor; in fall I'd choose them over any other fruit. They are that good.
