Diana, this is exactly what I do as well. My natural nails are fairly long so the way I grip them limits how much I can take off. I used fine grit sandpaper but I can tell that the sanded area is darker than the rest of the seed. I then plant; I don't soak.

I planted four hibiscus sabdariffa 'roselle' seeds on 8/1/18 and two of them sprouted yesterday. I think the other two will break the soil tomorrow. I'll plant them this fall and hopefully have a ton of flower next summer. @Pod thank you very much for these seeds; I plan to dry the flowers and make some jam next year!!
