I have deer around our place, and I don't encourage them at all by feeding. I even stopped feeding the birds, because that attracted the deer to the bird feeders. I scare the deer when I see them, however, I don't think that works for long. I use Bobbex on a regular basis, and spray when the foliage appears in the spring, then again when the scapes appear, then about every three weeks or so throughout the season. This has worked for me. This year, one very young deer bit off a daylily bloom, but I found the bloom spat out nearby, so I guess it didn't taste good. The daylily blooms were not bothered again after that. Then he/she decided to go after the hosta. I hadn't sprayed a few hosta fairly close to the house since they are not usually bothered by deer that close to the house. After the first one was munched, I sprayed all of the hostas, and the damage stopped. It does seem to be effective. There are other products available, but I have stuck with Bobbex since I have had good luck with it.
