Lori, bark is not expensive. Google orchid bark on-line. You could get a small bag on line, enough for 6-8 repottings.
But please, do not us mulch!! You want "orchid bark". Mulch will have sap or resin which will kill the plant.
As far as your friends plant goes, when thatsphagnum moss goes acidic, and it will, the plant will go downhill rapidly because to roots will die quickly. By the time she notices, it may be hard to save the plant. The phrase is "ticking timebomb!" And trust me, you do not want that.
