One thing that I don't do "enough of", is to write the plant name , using a permanent marker, on a strip of plastic, cut from a milk carton....then "plant" the strip right along with the plant. The writing will stay "readable" for a long, long time, and provides one sure way to ID it when you dig. I use "plant labels "....for visitors to see the name, and aluminum tags with the name "etched" onto them, and wired to a long nail, as a more "permanent " marker.....they are less likely to blow away, get pulled out by critters...whatever, but, they aren't very easy for visitors to read. As you "evolve" as a "grower" you will, no doubt, find that each method of marking has it's good, and bad, points, and will also discover that even though it's "mapped", and "marked", you will still "lose" one, occasionally
