As I recall, a former neighbor that grew tobacco fields, In N. Carolina, mentioned to me, they obtained their seedlings, from a grower, that produced the seedlings, by hydroponic method,. Likely, the seeds were mosaic free, grown clean & possibly mechinanized transplanting process.
Then, the crop is supposed to be rotated, as it can remain in the soil, from leaves & roots. Growing it, tends to deplete the soil. Usually, the Tobacco mosaic virus is spread by aphids & other such insects (leafhoppers?) But washing one's hands after smoking, is best if handling Solanacea family of plants, including bell peppers. Particularly when transplanting... Plant seed catalogs often state, if a particular tomato variety is resistant to certain diseases;
V- Verticillium Wilt
F- Fusarium Wilt
N- Nematodes
T- Tobacco Mosaic Virus
A- Alternaria Stem Canker
St- Stemyphyllum Gray Leaf Spot
TSWV- Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus
EB- Early Blight
LB- Late Blight
But, I would be concerned, mainly if there were aphids & leafhopper infestations, which can spread diseases. Though a tobacco smoker for nearly 40 years, I only recall one bell pepper that had a few distorted leaves & they eventually fell off, not long after transplanting & I disposed of them. But there was a a leafhopper infestation at that location.
Any time I noticed aphids on any new Iris growth, I immediately used the hose, with the hand held sprayer to forcefully remove them, if I couldn't easily brush them off, in spring time. Otherwise, they lay eggs, for more to hatch out. Thus attracting even more to congregate....
