Yum, Blackeyed Peas ... a southern staple that I grew up with and still love! It's a southern a tradition to eat blackeyed peas on New Year's Day ... supposedly brings luck for the new year ahead. My family didn't always have them at that time of year but we ate them a lot. A dear friend of mine still keeps the tradition and must have blackeyed peas on the dinner table on January 1st every year ... whether anyone eats them or not!
Although born and raised in the south I've never had Poke that I can remember. Collards and turnips are another story, I do not like either. I remember my grandmother making me eat Collards, Turnips and Rutabaga's as a youngster and I swore as a grown up I'd never touch them again ... and haven't! Just the thought of having to eat them makes me cringe. I do love cabbage ... and spinach ... especially spinach/strawberry salad! All this talk of food is making me hungry, I think I'll go have a snack ... but, it won't be leafy greens.
