It looks like a Salvia.
One possibility is
Forsythia Sage (Salvia madrensis 'Red Neck Girl')
It is a short-day/long-night bloomer so early frosts can take it out before blooming. See if these stems look familiar.

It would be hard to say for sure based on that one photo, though, since there are nearly a thousand species of Salvia!
