Thank you for your reply!The woody and dead center was above the soil line. I had to use a sharp knife to divide it as I couldn't tear it apart with my hands. They do seem to have a smaller rhizome at the base of the stems with attached roots. There is no scent however, which I would think there would be with ginger? To me it looks like a type of grass; I do grow a variety of perennial Ornamental grasses and it is similar. Although it has a rhizome structure it doesn't look at all like ginger to me as well. The pot is 10" in diameter and the plant is about 18-24 " from the soil line at it's highest point.
